BMTR Volunteer Application

Volunteers are so important to our program that we literally couldn’t run without them. Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, no previous horse experience required. There are many ways you can join and help. Positions include Adaptive Riding lesson Captain, Horse Leader, Side Walker, Spotter, (volunteers who work with our participants, must be at least 12 years old and understand and practice confidentiality) Feed Team, Farm Maintenance, Barn Buddy and Exercise and Conditioning Team.

First, let's get your basic info. We use Wranglr for helping to schedule our volunteers. Please enter your name, email and mobile number. This info will be used to communicate openings, your schedule and important info from BMTR. Make sure you have access to both the email account and the mobile for texts.

Photo & Publicity Release

I authorize the use and reproduction by Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding of any and all photographs and any other audio/visual materials taken of me for promotional material, educational activities, exhibitions or for any other use for the benefit of the programs.

Why do we need this info? Some volunteering roles and duties might require you to work with larger horses, carry heavier things, etc. We also work with Participants that have many different needs and the below information helps us make more informed decisions for our Participants and Volunteers. Please fill out whatever info you are comfortable sharing with us.

Medical Waiver

In the event of a medical emergency, the undersigned authorizes Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding and their designated agent to authorize such medical assistance as they determine to be necessary. This authorization includes x-ray, surgery, hospitalization, medication and any treatment deemed necessary or advisable by the responding physician. This provision will be invoked only if I am incapacitated and unable to provide direction or, if my parent/guardian cannot be reached.

Volunteering

We cannot provide Equine Assisted Services to our community without Volunteers. For Adaptive riding we need up to 3 volunteers per rider/horse! We also have a lot of volunteer roles in which you can share your talents. Being an active part of the Adaptive Riding program and be “hands-on” with the courageous participants as a side-walker or horse leader. Training workshops will be provided periodically. Here are the roles we need volunteers to fill. FUNDRAISING: If special events are your forte, you can help in the planning, preparation, and execution of our fundraising events held throughout the year. If you have experience or wish to learn about. HORSE LEADER: Prepare horses for classes – groom, tack and warm up. Assure safety for horses and riders during lessons​. CAPTAIN: Greet rider & rider’s family. Get rider’s helmet and assist with putting it on. SIDEWALKER: Support rider while mounting the horse. Communicate with rider during lesson. Ensure safety of rider before, during, and after the lesson. FEED Team: Feed Horses hay and supplements (if appropriate), clean, and fill all water troughs, Muck and assist with trash disposal, assist with medical treatments, Mucking and trash control. BARN BUDDIES: time spent with our Horses when they are not in class is vital! Spend time and love grooming, hand grazing and most of all communicating with our Horses how much they are loved. FARM MAINTENANCE: Special projects including mending fences, construction projects fixing gates, trail maintenance, weed prevention/control. PHOTOGRAPHY: still and movies of classes and events, portraits of our Horse staff, photos of our great volunteers, social media/web maintenance/advertising.























Important Information and Acceptances

General Liability Release

Assumption of risk and indemnity agreement READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING IT. YOUR SIGNATURE/E SIGNATURE/STATEMENT INDICATES YOU UNDERSTAND IT AND AGREE TO ITS TERMS. BY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT, YOU AND YOUR CHILD ARE GIVING UP CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO SUE OR RECOVER DAMAGES IN CASE OF INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGES, FOR ANY REASON, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE NEGLIGENCE OF BLUE MOUNTAIN THERAPEUTIC RIDING, ITS OWNERS, EMPLOYEES AND AGENTS. In consideration for allowing me or my minor child to handle and ride a horse and on behalf of myself, my child or our personal representatives, heirs, next-of-kin, spouses and assigns, I HEREBY: 1. Acknowledge that a horse, pony, donkey or mule, may without warning or any apparent cause, may buck, stumble, trip, fall, rear, bite, kick, run, or make unpredictable movements, spook, jump obstacles, step on a person’s foot, push or shove a person, and tack, saddles or bridles may loosen or break all of which may cause injury or the rider to fall or be jolted resulting in serious injury or death. 2. Acknowledge that therapeutic horseback riding is an inherently dangerous activity and involves risks that may cause serious injury and in some cases death, because of the unpredictable nature and irrational behavior of horses, regardless of their training and past performances. 3. Acknowledge and willingly assume and accept full responsibility for all risk to personal safety and welfare including danger of injury or death, which is inherent in the handling or riding of a horse, and use of tack, saddles, bridles, regular or special equipment, or adaptive gear, provided by Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding. 4. Release, discharge and promise not to sue, Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding for any loss, damage, injury, including death, or cost to me or my child’s person or property arising out of riding or handling a horse, or use of tack, saddles, bridles, or gear provided by Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding. 5. Release Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding from any claim that Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding was negligent in connection with my or my child’s riding a horse, including but not limited to, training or selecting horses, maintenance, care, fit or adjusting of saddles, bridles, tack, instruction on riding skills or leading and supervising riders, which resulted in loss, damage, injury or both. 6. Indemnify, and save and hold harmless, Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding, from and against any loss, liability, damage or cost that may occur out of, or in any way connected with either my or my child’s handling or riding the horse and/or use of any tack, saddles, bridles, equipment or gear provided, therewith resulting from or contributing to, me or my child’s negligence. 7. Expressly agree that the foregoing release and assumption of risk and indemnity agreement, is governed by the laws of the State of Washington and is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by Washington law, and that in the event any portion of this agreement is determined to be invalid or unenforceable, for any reason, the balance of the agreement shall not be affected or impaired in any way and shall continue to be in full legal force and effect. 8. Acknowledge that this document is a contract and agree that if a lawsuit is filed against Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding, for any injury, or damage of this contract, I will pay all attorney’s fees and costs incurred by Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding, in defending such an action. 9. All riders must wear a protective helmet. A protective helmet will be provided. 10. If the person who is to enter into this agreement is less than 18 years of age, or incapable to discern this agreement, his/her parent or guardian must read this agreement, and sign below on behalf of the minor. I HAVE READ THIS DOCUMENT, I UNDERSTAND IT IS A PROMISE NOT TO SUE, AND TO RELEASE THE CORPORATION, BLUE MOUNTAIN THERAPEUTIC RIDING, IT’S OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES AND AGENTS, FOR ALL CLAIMS. I HAVE MADE A FREE AND DELIBERATE CHOICE TO SIGN THE RELEASE AND WAIVER AS A CONDITION TO ATTEND, BLUE MOUNTAIN THERAPEUTIC RIDING, AND ALLOWING ME OR MY CHILD TO RIDE OR HANDLE A HORSE. I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT THE RISKS INVOLVED AND THE RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY IS WORTH THE PLEASURE OF THE HORSEBACK RIDING EXPERIENCE.

Confidentiality

I understand the expectation that all information related to the participants/clients of Blue Mountain Therapeutic Riding (BMTR) is considered confidential in nature. I further understand the liability of people with access to participant/client information and hereby agree to protect and preserve the confidential nature of all participant/client information to which I have access. This information is to be used only for facilitating the goals and objectives of the individual participant/client, according to the direction of the instructor or therapist. In consideration of the right to privacy of the participant/client and their families, I understand the need to use appropriate discretion in written comments and in related conversations with volunteers, staff, family, or the public. Any breach of this confidentiality will result in termination.
