MKE Urban Stables Volunteer Application

Welcome to MKE Urban Stables — a place of togetherness, healing, and connection. We work alongside our community to provide meaningful opportunities for therapy, personal growth, and Equine-Assisted Learning. Since opening our doors in May 2020, MKE Urban Stables has proudly become the first facility in the nation to combine equine-assisted therapy, community engagement programming, and mounted police patrol. We are especially honored to serve our Veterans. What Does Volunteering Look Like at MKE Urban Stables? Our barn is home to: Two miniature horses Two miniature donkeys Three full-size horses Barn Cat Two guinea pigs All of our animals rely on the care and support of our dedicated volunteers and staff. Volunteer Responsibilities May Include: Mucking stalls Filling water buckets Pushing wheelbarrows General barn cleaning and upkeep *Physical Requirements for Chore Shifts: Volunteers should be able to consistently lift up to 30 pounds and walk for approximately 40 minutes at a time. If you are unable to meet these requirements, please indicate this in the medical condition section of your application. This will not prevent you from volunteering—it simply helps us plan appropriately. Experience: *Horse experience is preferred but not required. We provide guidance, training, and ongoing support to ensure volunteers feel confident and safe. Volunteer Training (Required) Before you are allowed to volunteer, all volunteers must complete a mandatory 2-hour training session. During this training, we will cover: Basic horsemanship Horse behavior and body language Safety guidelines and expectations This training ensures the safety of our volunteers, staff, and animals while setting everyone up for a positive experience. As You Grow With Us, Opportunities May Include: Grooming and bonding with our horses Assisting in Equine-Assisted Learning programs as a horse handler Supporting community events and special programs throughout the year

Medical Waiver

I, the undersigned volunteer, acknowledge that working in and around a barn, animals, and related equipment involves certain inherent risks, including but not limited to: injury from animals, slips or falls, exposure to dust or allergens, and other hazards associated with an agricultural environment. I understand that participation is voluntary and that I am physically able to perform the activities assigned. I agree to assume full responsibility for any injury, illness, or medical condition that may occur while volunteering, whether caused by negligence or otherwise. In the event of an accident or medical emergency, I authorize the barn staff or designated representatives to obtain medical treatment for me, including transportation to a medical facility, and I agree to be responsible for any related costs. I hereby release, waive, and discharge MKE Urban Stables, its owners, employees, agents, and affiliates from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action arising out of or related to my participation as a volunteer. I have read and fully understand this waiver, and I sign it freely and voluntarily.

Important Information and Acceptances

General Liability Release

As a volunteer at MKE Urban Stables, I acknowledge the risks and potential for risk of an equine program and all activities involved. However, I feel that the possible benefits to me and the clients with which I work are greater than the risk assumed. I hereby, intending to be legally bound for myself, my heirs and assigns, executors of administrators, waive and release forever all claims for damages against MKE Urban Stables, its Board of Directors, instructors, therapists, volunteers and/or employees for any and all injuries and/or losses I may sustain while participating at MKE Urban Stables. I further release MKE Urban Stables for any actions of its Board of Directors, instructors, therapists, volunteers and/or employees occurring outside the scope of the program itself, including but not limited to transportation, care, giving, horse exercising, etc. I understand that UNDER WI LAW, AN EQUINE ACTIVITY SPONSOR OR EQUINE PROFESSIONAL IS NOT LIABLE FOR AN INJURY TO OR THE DEATH OF A PARTICIPANT IN AN EQUINE ACTIVITY RESULTING FROM AN INHERENT RISK OF EQUINE ACTIVITY. NOTICE: A PERSON WHO IS ENGAGED FOR COMPENSATION IN THE RENTAL OF EQUINES OR EQUINE EQUIPMENT OR TACK OR IN THE INSTRUCTION OF A PERSON IN THE RIDING OR DRIVING OF AN EQUINE OR IN BEING A PASSENGER UPON AN EQUINE IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE INJURY OR DEATH OF A PERSON INVOLVED IN EQUINE ACTIVITIES RESULTING FROM THE INHERENT RISKS OF EQUINE ACTIVITIES, AS DEFINED IN SECTION 895.481(L)(E) OF THE WISCONSIN STATUTES.

What This Means While you’re here, you might learn things about: Clients and their families Other volunteers and staff Our animals and their care How our barn runs day-to-day Some of this information is private, and we trust you to keep it that way. Never post identifying details or photos of clients without permission. Treat all information with the same care you’d want for your own.
